Circulation Service

Most of the materials in the Multimedia Collection are for in-house use in the Library. To facilitate teaching preparation, teaching staff could borrow these materials for use outside the Library.

Borrowing

  • Loan quota and Loan period of multimedia materials
  • How to use library materials inside the library premises:
    Carrels on the G/F
    1. Get the material you need from the CD, DVD, LD, VCD Collections
    2. Register at the Circulation Counter
    3. Use the material selected at one of the 42 carrels

Standalone Computers (UCL117 & UCL118) on the 1/F

  1. Get the material you need from the CDROM Collection
  2. Use the material selected at one of the workstations

Carrels on the 2/F

    1. Select video tape/ sound cassette from the collection
    2. Use the material at corresponding carrels
    3. Insert Student/Staff/Library Card in the card reader to power on the equipment

Returns

  • Return materials after In-library use: 
    1. Materials used on the G/F should be returned to the Circulation Counter
    2. Materials used on the 1/F & 2/F could be left on the book trucks provided on each floor
  • Audiovisual materials on loan can be returned to any CUHK Libraries.
  • Book Drops - All non-print materials should not be returned to any of the ULS book drops

Renewals

Teaching staff can renew checked out non-print materials twice provided that the materials are not booked for a particular class. Online renewals can be done by viewing your own circulation record.

For other circulating materials, users can check out, check in and renew the items at the circulation counter on the G/F. Books borrowed from other libraries of the University Library System can be returned to the circulation counter or the book drop when the Library is closed.

Multimedia Facilities

The Multimedia Library is equipped with audiovisual carrels on G/F and 2/F for individuals to use different kinds of the library materials such as DVD, VCD, CD, audiocassettes and videocassettes etc. Standalone PCs are available on 1/F for self-installing the library's CDROM collection.

At the plasma TV area on G/F, selected Cable TV channels will be broadcasted daily.  Details of the programmes broadcasted can be found next to the plasma TV.

Room Facilities

Group Viewing Room

4 group-viewing rooms located on the 2/F are available for booking for a minimum of 3 users. Booking could be made online via the Library Room Booking System.  Users can make up to 2 bookings for 7 days ahead.

Seminar Rooms & Hands-on Area

Seminar rooms are located on the 1/F of the United College Wu Chung Multimedia Library. They are equipped with LCD projector, VHS players, DVD players and PCs for teaching purpose. Access to the Classnet is also provided. In addition, a hands-on area consisting of 21 PCs on the 1/F can be booked for computer-related training. These room facilities are suitable to large group presentations, workshops and seminars. The seminar rooms and the hands-on area could be booked by teaching staff through the Library Room Booking System. Other users can book the two Seminar Rooms in non-teaching hours (Mon - Fri 7:00pm - 10:00pm, all Sat, Sun and public holiday when the Library is open).

Late Reading Room

A late reading room is located on the LG/F of the United College Wu Chung Multimedia Library. It opens half an hour before the Library closes and closes half an hour after the Library opens. The room opens 24 hours during examination period.

Network Printing

All computers on the 1/F are connected to networked laser jet printers.  

Printing Charges:

HK$0.35 per A4 page (B/W)
HK$2.5 per A4 page (Colour)
HK$4.5 per A3 page (Colour)

Computing Facilities

Information Commons

The Information Commons is located on the 1/F. There are computers for general use and also for self-installation of the library's CDROM. Scanners and CD writers are available.

ClassNet Connection

Users can connect their own notebook PC with a VPN Client to the network outlets at the Reading area on all floors. Campus-wide E-mail System (Mailserv) computing id and password are required for authentication.

Wireless LAN

Wi-Fi Area posters are available in the University Library System to identify the wireless LAN cover areas. For connecting the Wi-Fi devices with SSID=cuhk, computing ID and CWEM password supplied by ITSC will be required for authentication.

Self-Service Photocopying

Black and white self-service photocopiers are available on the G/F and 1/F for the convenience of library user. Please note that photocopying of the library materials is governed by current Copyright Regulations in Hong Kong.

Facilities for users with Disabilities

Wu Chung Multimedia Library has two sets of computer and one reading edge machine, with associated software and scanner for low vision students. They are:

  • One PC with LunarPlus for screen Magnification and speech synthesis
  • One PC with Advant Edge Software upgrade and connected with a HP Scanjet 6100C scanner
  • One Reading Edge machine

There is also a Page Turner which can turn the pages for users by simply pressing a button.

Court Garden

Located on the 1/F balcony of the United College Multimedia Library, the lovely outdoor Court Garden is landscaped with a lush curving lawn bordered by ornamental pebbles, enclosed by seasonal flower beds and decorated with a plant-filled lattice wall. Comfortable outdoor furniture and drinks vending machines are provided. Overlooking the tranquil view of the United College waterfall and the University campus, it is an ideal place for Library users to relax from their daily worries.

Rules for Use

  • The normal opening hours of the Court Garden:
Monday to Friday: 9 a.m. - 6 p.m.
Saturday: 9 a.m. - 6 p.m.

Sunday:

1 p.m. - 6 p.m.
  • During public holidays, the Court Garden will open when the library opens and will close 30 minutes before library closes.
  • The Court Garden will be closed in poor weather without prior notice.
  • No food and drinks should be brought back into the Library. Non-alcoholic beverages only, and no smoking in the Court Garden, please.
  • Please respect the environment and flowers and plants of the Court Garden.
  • Please observe these simple rules and enjoy the Court Garden.
