Book Drop

    A book drop is placed outside the Library for returning of library materials when the Library is closed. It operates from the time the Library is closed until the Library re-opens the next day.

    The following materials should not be returned to the Book Drop:

    • Multimedia materials
    • Reserve books
    • Books not charged out by computers
    • Non-CUHK Library materials

     

Circulation
  • Printed Materials

    Except references and special collections, all print materials in the Library are available for loan. Users are requested to present a valid borrower's card when charging out the materials at the Circulation Counter. The borrowing privileges vary with different groups of users. 

    Except as otherwise stated, all books could be renewed 5 times provided that no other user has placed hold on them.  All items charged out can be reserved online and are subject to recall. Please refer to online renewal and online request for details.  Overdue fines will be leved on items not returned on time.

    Except reserve books, multimedia materials and those non-CUHK library materials, all other library materials could be returned to any libraries or book drops.

  • Multimedia & AV Materials

    All multimedia and AV materials are intended primarily for in-house use only for a maximum of 4 hours. But to facilitate teaching and class presentation, teaching staff and students may also borrow them according to the privileges specified.

 

Faculty Liaison Programme
    The Medical Librarian, Miss Louisa Lam, heads the Faculty Liaison Team for the Faculty of Medicine with the mission to enhance communication and collaboration with the Faculty so as to improve library services for them. Formal and informal contacts with the faculty members will be arranged from time to time.

 

Hong Kong Academic Library Link (HKALL)  
  • About the Service

    The Hong Kong Academic Library Link or HKALL is a joint project of the eight UGC libraries in Hong Kong to share each other's resources. Through the service, all CUHK staff and students including Honorary Clinical Lecturers, postgraduates and undergraduate students may request circulating books of the other seven UGC libraries, and have these items delivered to the following libraries for checking out:

    • Medical Library
    • University Library
    • Legal Resources Center

    To find the desired HKALL items, all eligible users may:

    1. Search the HKALL union catalogue; or CUHK Library Union Catalogue and then click the "HKALL button" at the top menu to see if the desired item is available in other UGC libraries.
    2. If the item is found, then click "request this title" to place hold on the item. 
    3. Follow the on-screen instruction to select your home library and then the Pickup Location.  You may now select "Medical Library at PWH" as the Pickup Location.
    4. You will receive a Hold Pickup notice after the book has been delivered to the selected library. All students will receive an email Hold Pickup Notice.

  • Change of Pick Up Location

    1. Pick-up at Medical Library

      You can select to pick up a requested item at Medical Library when you submit the request to HKALL.  Or the item can be transferred from the University Library to the Medical Library only for picking up and checking out. The service is free of charge. The request has to be made within 5 days after receiving the Hold Pickup Notice by filling in an application form at the Circulation Counter of the Medical Library.

    2. Pick-up at other branch libraries

      Through the CUHK Inter-branch Book Delivery Service, users could request transferring the HKALL items from the Univeristy Library to a preferred branch library other than the Medical Library.  Similarly, the request has to be made within 5 days after receiving the Hold Pickup Notice by filling in an application form at any Circulation counter of ULS. The charge is HK$10 per item.

       

    Interbranch Book Delivery Service
    • All circulating books of the University Library System (ULS), excluding reserve books and United College Library Language Collection, could be delivered from the holding library to any library of CUHK indicated by the user for picking up and checking out. 

    • Library users may apply for this service online or at any Circulation Counters in person. The service is free for transferring books between the Medical Library and other campus libraries  while the delivery charge amongst campus libraries is HK$10 / book. It will take 3 working days for delivery upon receipt of the request. If a hold has been placed on a book, user can only apply to change the pickup location online or in person before the Hold Pickup Notice has been sent.

     

    Interlibrary Loan & Document Delivery
    • Interlibrary Loan

      For materials not available in the Medical Library or other libraries in the University Library System, all eligible users can request borrowing them in local or overseas libraries via the automated system ILLiad. Please refer to CUHK ILLiad User Guide for using the ILLiad.

      Eligible users include all teaching staff, postgraduates, research staff, administrative staff (Terms A) and final year undergraduates.  For final year undergraduates, the service covers photocopying of articles that are available in CUHK, UGC libraries or overseas libraries with reciprocol arrangement.  Book loans are not included.

      In each academic year (August to July of the following year), each user will be offered the following free quota for articles photocopied from local libraries.  Books loans are free and are not included in this free quota.  Articles photocopied from overseas libraries will be subsidized.  Each article within quota will be charged a flat fee of HK$60. Any requests exceeding the quota will be charged at cost.

      All users are welcome to register with Hong Kong International MEDLARS Center for articles available in US National Library of Medicine.

    • Document Delivery

      This service refers to photocopying journal articles that are available in the Medical Library or other branch libraries. Your request could be placed online via ILLiad. The eligibility, quota and cost is the same as that of interlibrary loan.

     

    Library Instruction
      Instructional leaflets and pamphlets on the use of various library resources are available. Regular library orientations and workshops are organized for new medical, nursing and pharmacy students at the beginning of term. Library seminars or workshops can be arranged on request.

     

    Online Database Searching
      A total of 46 computers are available for accessing the CUHK online library catalogue as well as the numerous electronic resources subscribed by the Medical Library including:


      These computers could also access the online catalogues of other UGC libraries and the wide array of resources on the Internet. One-on-one instruction on the use of these resources as well as mediated searches by the Medical Librarian are also provided.

     

    Reference
      The Medical Librarian at the Information Desk provides assistance in locating and using information resources, recommending appropriate references or library sources, and helping to interpret the source if necessary. All users are welcome to e-mail questions to us.

     

    Remote Storage Materials
    • The monographs, references and periodicals of the Medical Library that are kept in the remote storage are available for loan. Users can place hold on those items by following the normal request procedure. Please refer to online request for details. The items would be ready for pickup in the University Library 72 hours after the hold has been placed.

    • The back issues of newspapers in the remote storage are not circulating and can only be used in the University Library. Interested users could fill in a request form available at the Circulation Counter of the Medical Library or other circulation counters of CUHK libraries. Users will be informed when the newspaper is ready for use.

     

    Reserve Books Service
      Reserve items consisting of books, articles, handouts for course readings are available at the Circulation Counter for loan on various loan periods. All teaching staff of the Faculty are welcome to request materials to be placed on reserve, either in print or electronic formats. 
      The request could be submitted online by completing the Request Form for Hardcopy Reserve for print materials to be accessed in the Library only, or the Request Form for Electronic Reserve for full-text articles or placing non-copyrighted materials on the web. The reserve collection will be reviewed at the end of each semester to decide on the materials for the next semester.

     

    24-Hour Study Room
      A 24-Hour Study Room will operate 24-hours a day, 7 days a week. It is equipped with 139 study carrels and Wireless LAN for easy connection to the Internet. In the daytime, it also forms part of the seating area of the library. Thus, the room has to be cleared half an hour before the library closes and re-open 15 minutes later. The CU Link Card will be used for authentication to access the room after the library closes. For the sake of security, the room is monitored by CCTV surveillance system.

     

    Group Discussion Rooms
      To facilitate intensive group work, two group discussion rooms with a total seating capacity of 12 are available for reservation at a minimum of 3 users on a first-come-first-served basis. The rooms are now covered wtih Wireless Lan for accessing the Internet. Please enquire at the Circulation Counter of the Medical Library.
      From August 6, 2007, all reservations can be made online via a new system Library Room Booking System. Each user can book 1 session (minimum 30 minutes & maximum 120 minutes) per day per each library of the University and 2 sessions at most per week per library.  Users or groups that are 10 minutes late will forfeit the reservation.   Other booking policies and the user guide can be refered to the FAQs

       

      Information Commons
        A total of 27 computers labelled with [IC] are installed with the following application softwares to support word processing, web authoring and other related tasks at the desktop:

      Motion-activated Lights
        To be environmentally friendly and to save energy, the bound periodicals area is installed with motion-activated lights. When the area is not in use, only minimal lighting will be provided.

       

      Network Printing

        Three networked laser printers are connected to most workstations in the Library to facilitate printing from the computers. One of them is for color printing.  Fees for the service will be charged using the auto-charging system. An add-value machine is provided to enable adding values to the CU Link Card or the library photocopying card.

       

      Self-Service Photocopying
        Three photocopiers are available, two of them use Octopus and the other uses the library photocopying card.  The photocopiers at the Library are intended for library use only. Anyone making photocopies must observe the current copyright law in force.

       

      Wireless LAN
        The 24-Hour Study Room and the two Group Discussion Rooms are covered with Wireless LAN (Wi-Fi) which allows wireless connection to a local area network. This Wi-Fi service is available to all staff and students, alumni and visiting guests. Posters are already mounted in the following Wi-Fi covered areas. Details on how to connect to the service is available in the web page of ITSC.


        Alternatively, by using the VPN technology, any laptop computer equipped with a wireless network card and VPN client software are allowed access to the Internet via ClassNet anywhere anytime in these two rooms.  Please click VPN set up for details. Campus-wide E-mail System (Mailserv) computing id and password are required for authentication.
