How to Create Direct Links to Online Journal Articles

How to Create Direct Links to Online Journal Articles

INTRODUCTION

The Library has subscribed to a number of databases which contain full text articles. Many of these databases provide persistent or stable URLs to the online journal articles that CUHK teaching staff can add the links into their web-based course materials so that students can view and download the articles directly. Please be reminded that owing to the restriction of license agreement, only links to full text articles can be added to websites containing course materials but not the articles.

The following databases provide either persistent or stable URLs to journal articles that teaching staff can add into their course materials:

This page is a general guideline to creating direct links to journal articles available in databases subscribed by CUHK Libraries. Should you have any difficulties in creating direct links or other related matters, please always feel free to contact Reserve Books Counter via email (resbk@lib.cuhk.edu.hk) or telephone (2609-8740).

METHODS

Different publisher or vendor has a different way of creating direct links to journal articles. There are three most commonly used methods:

  1. URL from browser: Simply copy the URL (should begin with http:// ) on the Address or Location of the browser and add Easy Access prefix to the beginning of the URL. The basic syntax of the direct link will be like:

    http://easyaccess.lib.cuhk.edu.hk/login?url=URL

  2. Persistent or stable URL: Some databases provide a Persistent Link (EBSCOhost) or Document URL (ProQuest) to the record of a journal article. Copy the Link or URL and add Easy Access prefix to the beginning of the Link or URL. The basic syntax of the direct link will be like:

    http://easyaccess.lib.cuhk.edu.hk/login?url=stable URL

  3. Digital Object Identifier (DOI): A unique and persistent identifier of alpha-numeric character string assigned to a document and is probably the most stable link to a document. Copy the DOI number and add Easy Access prefix and DOI prefix to the beginning of the DOI number. The basic syntax of the direct link will be like:

    http://easyaccess.lib.cuhk.edu.hk/login?url=http://dx.doi.org/DOI Number

NOTE:
No matter which method you use, always remember to add the Easy Access prefix (http://easyaccess.lib.cuhk.edu.hk/login?url=) to the beginning of URL so that your students can access the articles even though they are not using CUHK campus network.

PROCEDURES TO CREATE DIRECT LINKS

    1. Locate the article you want
    2. Go into the abstract to locate the DOI Number

    1. Add http://easyaccess.lib.cuhk.edu.hk/login?url=http://dx.doi.org/ to the beginning of the DOI Number.
      For example:
      http://easyaccess.lib.cuhk.edu.hk/login?url=http://dx.doi.org/10.1017/S1366728906002471

    2. Go into the record to locate the Persistent link to this record

    3. Add http://easyaccess.lib.cuhk.edu.hk/login?url= to the beginning of the Persistent link to this record.
      For example:
      http://easyaccess.lib.cuhk.edu.hk/login?url=http://search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?
      direct=true&db=aph&AN=18189059&site=ehost-live

      For example:
      http://easyaccess.lib.cuhk.edu.hk/login?url=http://dx.doi.org/10.1080/07481180591004543
    4. Copy the URL to your course materials

    3. Add http://easyaccess.lib.cuhk.edu.hk/login?url= to the beginning of the URL.
      For example:
      http://easyaccess.lib.cuhk.edu.hk/login?url=http://ieeexplore.ieee.org/xpls/abs_all.jsp?
      isnumber=4014333&arnumber=4014334&count=25&index=0

A. Open URL

    1. To access a journal article on Ingenta via OpenURL, two elements are needed for the ULR: a base URL and the metadata elements of an article.
    2. The base URL syntax is: http://openurl.ingenta.com/content?genre=article
    3. The metadata elements of an article include:
      ISSN (&issn=)
      Volume (&volume=)
      Issue (&issue=)
      Start page of article (&spage=)
      End page of article (&epage=)

    4. A complete OpenURL syntax will thus be a combination of the base URL and the metadata elements of an article as below :
      http://openurl.ingenta.com/content?genre=article&issn=XXXX-XXXX&volume=X&issue=X&spage=XXX&epage=XXX
    5. The procedure to create a direct link via OpenURL

      1. Locate the journal article you want
      2. Go into the record to locate the metadata elements of the article
      3. Click on the Title of the journal to get ISSN from the publisher¡¦s site if necessary

        &issn=1360-063X
        &volume=43
        &issue=10
        &spage=1737
        &epage=1756

      5. Add http://easyaccess.lib.cuhk.edu.hk/login?url= to the beginning of the basic URL and the metadata elements:
        http://easyaccess.lib.cuhk.edu.hk/login?url=http://openurl.ingenta.com/content?
        genre=article&issn=1360-063X&volume=43&issue=10&spage=1737&epage=1756
