General


What are the opening hours of the Library?

The University Library, Chung Chi College Library, New Asia College Library, United College Multimedia Library and Law Library open 8:20 a.m. - 10:00 p.m. Monday to Friday, 8:20 a.m. - 7:00 p.m. on Saturdays, and 1:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m. on Sundays when the University is in session. For detailed information about branch libraries and holiday opening hours, please refer to the Library Opening Hours webpage.

How many libraries are there in the University Library System? Where are they located?

Seven, consisting of the University Library and the following six branch libraries: Chung Chi College Library, New Asia College Library, United College Library, Medical Library, Architecture Library and the Law Library. Please refer to the Location Map to see their different locations.

What should I do if I lose my CU Link or Library Card?

If you have lost your CU Link Card, please report the loss to the CU Link Card Centre and the Library at your earliest convenience. For Library Borrower’s / Reader’s Card holders, please report the loss of your Library borrowers card to the Library.

What should I do if I have forgotten my Library Password?

You may click on Forget Your Library Password in My Library Record. A message will be displayed to acknowledge your request and for security reason, you will be asked to reset your password via the link provided in an email sent to you.

I have lost some valuables in the Library. Who should I contact?

All lost items (except Library cards) found by staff and students will be kept at the Library circulation counter for 7 days, and then transferred to the University’s Security Unit (or the CU Link Card Centre for CU Link cards) if no one claims the items.

How can I make a suggestion to the Library?

Please send your comments to library@cuhk.edu.hk. All suggestions with senders' names and contacts will be promptly replied to.

I am not affiliated with CUHK. Can I still use your libraries?

The Library will consider all applications for a reader’s card or a borrower’s card from non-CUHK members. Application procedures and forms can be downloaded online.



Library Collections


Are there any local TV programmes available for loan?

With permission from RTHK, ATV and TVB, selected current affairs and instructional TV programmes are digitized and are accessible online within the CUHK network. You may also borrow these programmes on discs. To search for the local TV programmes, please try United College Wu Chung Multimedia Library – Collection Search.

Where can I find the reading materials recommended for the course I am studying?

You can search materials in the course reserves by Prof/TA or Course on the Library Homepage. Course reserve items located in the University Library can be requested at the Circulation Counter on the G/F. For reserve items kept in branch libraries, you may make a request at their circulation counters.

Where can I find primary and secondary school teaching materials?

Located on 1/F of the Chung Chi College Library, the Instructional Materials Collection (IMC) houses the teaching materials for all secondary and primary schools’ subjects taught in Hong Kong.

How can I find past CUHK Examination papers?

You may access undergraduate past exam papers via the CUHK Examination Papers Database.

What can I do if I cannot find a book on the shelf?

Check the Library Catalogue again to make sure that the status is “NOT CHCKD OUT”. If the book is still not able to be located, please fill out a search request form at the Circulation Counter and we will try to locate the book for you.

I need an article that is not available in the Library. What should I do?

The Interlibrary Loan & Document Delivery Service can help to obtain journal articles not available in CUHK libraries for faculties, postgraduate and final year undergraduate students.

Does the Library accept donations?

The Library welcomes any donation of books and other materials. Please visit the webpage of Giving to the Library.

Can I photocopy a whole book?

No. Do not copy an entire book – even if you do the copying in stages over a period of time. For more details on copyright issues, please refer to CUHK: Copyright and Intellectual Property Rights.

How can I recommend books or media for the Library to acquire?

To make a recommendation, please complete the online suggestion form.



Borrowing & Returns


I received a library notice to inform me that my loan period has been shortened. Why?

Other users may place a hold in the Library Catalogue on an item that has been checked out. Once the item has been recalled, it will alter the due date to a shorter loan period for the original borrower. The new due date will show in your My Library Record and in the Recall Notice sent to you via email.

Is there anyway for me to borrow books available in the Medical Library without going there?

Users can request the Inter-Branch Book Delivery Service between the Medical Library and campus libraries, or from the Law Library to the Legal Resources Centre in Central free of charge by filling out the online form.

I need a book that is available only from other universities in Hong Kong. How can I borrow it?

If that particular book is available in one of the UGC-funded libraries in Hong Kong, users can request the item to be delivered to the University Library OR the Medical Library OR the Legal Resources Centre through the HKALL (Hong Kong Academic Library Link).

If I borrow something from the University Library, can I return it to New Asia Library?

Most library materials can be returned to any circulation counters of CUHK libraries, except course reserve materials and HKALL items. Click here for details.

How can I hold multimedia materials such as DVD or CD?

Multimedia materials are not available for holds. In fact, hold cannot be placed if:

  • The item is NOT checked out, unless the location is Remote: Pls Request/Hold
  • The item status is " IN TRANSIT ".
  • The item has already been checked out by you.
  • The item is a reserve book, an hourly loan item, or a multimedia material.
  • The item is a non-circulating item such as a reference book.
  • You have already used up your hold quota.
  • Your loan privilege has been suspended.


How can I hold and renew a reserve book?

Because of the short loan period for materials in the reserve collections, course reserve materials cannot be placed on hold or renewed.

How can I return books after the Library has closed?

Most library materials can be returned to library book drops during opening hours and after the library has closed, except for reserve materials, multimedia materials, and non-CUHK Library items borrowed with the JULAC Card and via HKALL. Click here for details.



Services and Facilities


How can I reserve a group study room in the University Library or other branch libraries?
I am a member of the teaching staff. What are the procedures for me to put some course materials in the Library for my students?

Professors, instructors and teaching assistants are welcome to place course reading materials on reserve in either print or electronic form. Please fill out the Reserve Request Form.

I am an undergraduate student. Can I get access to other UGC libraries?

As an undergraduate student, you can apply for a JULAC Reader’s Card which will be valid for one academic year from 1st August to 31st July of the next year. A $50 registration fee will be charged by each host library that you choose to access.

I am a postgraduate student. How can I get access to other UGC libraries?

Postgraduate students are eligible to apply for a free JULAC Borrower’s Card to borrow books and use the facilities of other UGC-funded libraries.

I use a wheelchair. Can I access the Library?

All CUHK libraries have installed various facilities to allow easy access for physically-challenged library users. Please feel free to contact library staff if you need assistance.

What is the standard air-conditioning temperature? Why is it so cold in the Library sometimes?

The Library has set its temperature in the range of 21-23 oC and relative humidity of 45-60%, which is suitable for users and books. However, it is inevitable that the temperature may fluctuate under different weather conditions. If you feel unusually cold in a specific area, please contact staff at the Circulation Counter.

Is Wi-Fi available in the Library?

Wi-Fi Internet access is available for CUHK students and staff. Instruction labels and Wi-Fi Area posters are located in all libraries to identify the areas covered by wireless LAN. CUHK alumni are also eligible to use the Wi-Fi. Please refer to ITSC’s CUHK Alumni Internet Access Services for setup procedures.

Are there any notebook computers available for loan in the Library?

Laptop computers are available for loan in three libraries: the Learning Garden of University Library, Chung Chi College Library and New Asia College Library. These laptop computers are to be used within the Library premises only.

Does the Library provide a colour photocopying service?

Colour photocopiers are installed in the University Library and all branch libraries.

Can the Library install MS Office in all computers?

To ensure the accessibility to various information sources, the Library has designated some PCs for searching library resources and surfing the Internet only, and therefore not all PCs will be installed with MS Office.



Research Support and Library Instruction


Are there any online library instruction programmes or face-to-face library workshops conducted on the weekends for part-time students?

Some library workshops are conducted in the evenings and on Saturdays. Users in groups may also request seminars or orientation sessions for a particular subject area. Please send your request to eref@cuhk.edu.hk.

Further online library instruction modules are also available on the Library Homepage under the Instruction section for self-directed learning. These include modules on the Information Literacy Tutorial, a CUHK Library Catalogue Guide, Subject Guides, Database Guides, etc.

I am going to take the Student IT Proficiency Test. Does the Library provide workshops on the IT Proficiency Test’s information literacy section?

The Library provides Information Literacy workshops to assist students in preparing for the Information Literacy Section of the Student IT Proficiency Test throughout the year. The schedule is posted on the Student IT Competence Programme webpage and the Library Homepage.

How can I find out if my articles are being cited by other researchers?

The Library offers the Citation Search Service to faculty members who are interested in finding out how many times their publications have been cited in the core journals of a discipline.

I am an academic staff member. Can the Library help me to do a literature search for my research project?

The Library provides extensive, in-depth research consultations for faculty members and postgraduate students. To make an appointment, please fill-out the online form.



Remote Access


How can I access the e-resources subscribed to by the Library when I am off-campus?

Current CUHK students and staff can have off campus access to web-based e-resources via Easy Access, VPN or Library Proxy Service. For details, please visit the Off-Campus Access to E-Resources webpage.

Can I access the online databases in other university libraries in Hong Kong?

Remote access to online resources of other libraries is not available due to licensing restrictions. If you are an undergraduate student, you can apply for a JULAC Reader’s Card for on-site access to online resources subscribed to by the other libraries. For postgraduate students and staff, please apply for a JULAC Borrower’s Card.

Can I continue to use the electronic resources from the Library after I graduate?

You may apply for the Digital Library Service for Alumni (DLSA) after graduation. Please be reminded that only some databases available to current CUHK students and staff are provided in the DLSA service and they may or may not be in full-text due to license agreement restrictions.
