Multimedia Collection

Books

The University Library houses extensive collections in science, engineering, social science, business administration, history and geography. Chung Chi College Library holds strong collections in music, religion, education, sports science, Western languages, Japanese literature and language, philology and linguistics. New Asia College Library houses good collections in Chinese literature, fine arts and philosophy. United College Library houses the multimedia collection and the notable Modern Chinese Drama Collection. The Medical Collection is housed in two different locations: the pre-clinical materials in the University Library and the clinical materials in the Li Ping Medical Library. The nucleus collection of the American Studies Resource Library located in the United College Library is an interdisciplinary resource donated by USIS American Library and the donation of the William Faulkner collection. Architecture Library is established to support the core curriculum of the Architecture programme, the collection covers subject in the buildings industry and environmental sciences.

Periodicals

There are over 10,608 current periodical subscriptions in the entire System, comprising research journals and other serial publications. Approximately two thirds of this collection is in English with the rest in Chinese almost half of which are from Mainland China. More selective journals in Japanese, French, German, Italian and Russian are also available in the System. Distribution of journals among various libraries is the same as that of books.

Newspapers

The University Library System receives over 80 newspapers, some of which are in branch libraries. In the University Library, the current issues are located on the 1/F of the Library Annex. Back files of many newspapers are available in either bound volumes or microforms. Microform editions are shelved in the Special Collection in the Library Annex. Bound volumes are displayed on open shelves on the LG/F.

Reference Books

Extensive collections of indexes and abstracts, bibliographies, calendars of foreign universities, encyclopedias, dictionaries, handbooks, and directories in paper and electronic formats are located on the 1/F of the University Library. Reference works in Western and East Asian languages are inter-shelved. These tools are intended for use in the library and do not circulate.

Hong Kong Government Documents

The University has been designated as a depository for publications of Hong Kong. Hong Kong Government publications are issued by departments and committees of the Hong Kong Government. They provide information on a wide variety of subjects and include monthly, bi-annual and annual reports, statistical analyses, directories, ordinances and pamphlets. The collection in both Chinese and English is kept in the Reference Room.

Electronic Resources

The University Library System provides access to a wide range of electronic resources covering all subject areas. Details of these databases are listed at the Library Homepage under Electronic Resources.

Special Collections

Special collections located on the G/F of the University Library consist of reserve books, microforms, and theses. Rare books are situated on the 3/F of the TKP Building.

Reserve Books: Required course materials are put on reserve requsted by teaching staff. This collection includes Open Reserve and Electronic Reserve.

Open Reserve consists of books from the Library's collection which are shelved on an open access area adjacent to the Reserve Books and Special Collections Counter. High use course materials are placed here for browsing and borrowing. Personal books and loose-leaf items such as lecture notes, journal articles and handouts are shelved behind the Counter. Reserve materials are for short-loan, ranging from 2 hours to 7 days.

Electronic Reserve includes class websites and scanned images of non-copyrighted documents such as syllabus, lecture notes, problem sets and solutions, etc. In addition, full-text articles available from the electronic databases including EBSCOhost, IEEE Xplore, IDEAL, JSTOR, OCLC Firstsearch Electronic Collections Online, Ovid Web Gateway and ProQuest can be added to the Electronic Reserve.

Theses: This is a collection of all master theses and doctoral dissertations by the graduate students of The Chinese University of Hong Kong. They include all titles submitted since 1967, with the exception of those classified as confidential (per authors' requests) which are only available from the relevant departments.

Theses are listed in the Theses Catalogue in the Reserve Books Department as well as the Library Online Catalogue.

Rare Books: The Chinese Rare Book Collection consists of over 850 classical titles in more than 14,000 volumes in traditional silk-stitched fascicles. The eitions range from the Yuan Dynasty (1260-1368) to the end of the Qianlong (1795) of the Qing Dynasty. The cream of the collection includes the world's only copies of Synthesis of Primary Learning《小學書集成》of the Yuan Dynasty, Collected Works of Mr. Qinghu《青湖先生文集》and Sound of Chicks《鷇音集》 of the Ming Dynasty. Two authentic and valuable titles of the Wenlang edition《文瀾閣》of Complete Library of Four Branches of Books 《四庫全書》 are Zhong Cheng Ji《中丞集》 and Shu Ying《書影》. (CD-ROM version of the Wenyuange edition 《文淵閣》 of Complete Library of Four Branches of Books《四庫全書》is available in the University Library System).

Complementing the Chinese rare books are the Western language books published before 1900. Both Chinese and Western rare books are kept in the Rare Book Room located on the 3/F, TKP Building.

Microforms: Many periodicals, newspapers and other materials are available in microform in the University Library. Valuable primary source materials are also available in microform sets, among them the newspaper materials on contemporary China, the genealogical records of the families of the New Territories of Hong Kong.

This collection of research materials consists of 24,519 reels of microfilm and 317,004 sheets of microfiche.

Multimedia Collection

Located at the United College Wu Chung Multimedia Library, the Collection is the University Library System’s primary collection of non-print materials. It comprises materials in a wide range of subject fields. The formats found here include videodiscs (VCD), digital versatile discs (DVD), laser disc (LD), compact audio discs (CD), videocassettes, audiocassettes, and slides, etc. The MML is also a full-scale expansion of the Library’s previous Electronic Resources Centre, housing a collection of interactive multimedia CD-ROMs on various subjects.
