ABSTRACT
Council on East Asian Libraries (CEAL) Special Committee to Study Proposal for Comprehensive Review of LCSH/NAR/SAR Entries for East Asian Studies Materials :

Its Findings, Recommendation, and Beyond.

A proposal was submitted to the Council on East Asian Libraries (CEAL) by Dr. Eugene W. Wu and Dr. Tai-loi Ma that CEAL should undertake a comprehensive review of LCSH/NAR/SAR entries for East Asian studies materials. The CEAL Executive Board established in spring 2004 the CEAL Special Committee to Study Proposal for Comprehensive Review of LCSH/NAR/SAR Entries for East Asian Studies Materials. In summer 2005, the Special Committee completed its work, including a pilot study of actually reviewing sampled parts of the LC/SACO/NACO Authority Files and a survey of CEAL members: as to their view toward the proposed comprehensive review of LCSH/NAR/SAR entries for East Asian studies materials; and, in case of actual implementation by CEAL of such comprehensive review, as to availability of each for such a production-mode project.  A final report was submitted to the Executive Board.  This presentation will highlight: Special Committee's findings through the pilot study, survey, and additional communication received from CEAL members; Special Committee's recommendation; and proposal originators' reaction to the report.

Although the Special Committee's recommendation was for PCC participants among CEAL members to continue with incremental improvement, on an as-encountered basis, of LCSHs/NARs/SARs for East Asian studies materials, the presentation would also explore possibilities of collaborative work with experts in this regard, such as librarians in Hong Kong.
