Louisa Kwok is currently the Head of Cataloging Department at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology Library, responsible for the management of all cataloging operations, the development of cataloing policies and procedures for all types of library resources, and ensuring efficient access to library materials for HKUST Library users. As HKUST Library participates actively in international cooperative cataloging programs, such as OCLC, NACO, CONSER, she also needs to oversee that cataloging records contributed to these programs are compliant with international standards and practices. In parallel to her duties relating to cataloging, she is also actively involved in the development of the Library Web, including the selection of relevant and quality Internet resources for the Library Web and for the Catalog, developing guidelines and policies for selection, and overseeing the structure and design of the Library Web.
Louisa joined the Hong Kong University of Science & Technology Library in 1990, initially as a reference librarian. During her earlier years with the newly founded university library, she had worked in different areas of user services, e.g. interlibrary loan, access services, bibliographic instructions, reference service, electronic resource evaluation, etc. Through these years, she has held a variety of management positions, including the Head of Document Supply Service and Access Services Manager. Louisa obtained her first degree from the Chinese University of Hong Kong, her professional qualification in librarianship from the University of New South Wales, and her MA degree in Information Technology Management from the Macquarie University in Australia.
ABSTRACT
Electronic Resources Cataloging: The Taming of the Shrewd
Very much like their counterparts in Hong Kong and other parts of the world, the HKUST librarians have to constantly grapple with various difficult issues arising from cataloging of electronic resources because of their volatile and unpredictable nature and the inadequacies of current cataloging practices in addressing the challenges they face in day-to-day work. Over all these years, with great efforts, HKUST Library has succeeded in putting some order into this fast growing mass of information resources and finding solutions that best serve our needs. Our participation in several international cooperative cataloging programs, e.g. OCLC, CONSER, has added more complication to the process. We often have to juggle between the compliance requirement of international cataloging standards and meeting the needs of our library users. In this presentation, I will share the experience that we have gained so far and examine the various issues we encountered from working with different types of electronic resources. There will also be a discussion on other related issues, such as, the adjustment of workflow, the cooperative efforts of different library units, the development of a comprehensive set of electronic resource procedures, and the linking of catalog records to other electronic resource applications, such as, the Electronic Resources Management module, WebBridge, database and e-journal listings, etc.
Apart from cataloging paid electronic resources, HKUST Library started cataloging open access Internet resources as early as in 1999. Our participation in OCLC earlier project, CORC, provided a foothold for the cataloging librarians to get familiarized with this type of resources. Since then they have been actively involved in developing the Internet Resources section of the Library Web and in selecting open access resources for cataloging. In this presentation, I will share our experience in this area, especially on how the selection is done, what criteria we use for evaluation, and how they are implemented and maintained.
