Library Workshops for Undergraduate Students 2016

All CUHK undergraduate students are welcome to attend the following library workshops. Postgraduate students are also welcome to attend if they wish. After attending five courses on information research skills, you will be granted a certificate of digital literacy by the Library. Students, in groups of ten or more, can request library courses to suit their information needs and schedules.

Program 1: How to Build Up Skills to Use the Library Effectively

Part A: How to Develop Effective Search Strategies
This workshop provides a foundation for new undergraduate students for their later research at the University and the Library. It covers concepts, terminology and basic research skills such as understanding reading lists, recognizing the difference between primary and secondary sources, scholarly and popular sources, as well as developing simple search strategies.

  • Printing service such as Octopus print, Express print, Wi-Fi print and 3D printing services;
  • Kindle and Laptop Computer Lending Services;
  • Multimedia workstations @ Learning Garden; and
  • Audio and Visual facilities in Group Study Rooms.

Introduces the Library's discovery tool, Easy Search, to locate journal articles in various subject areas.

Introduces major Chinese databases and demonstrates relevant searching techniques.

Program 3: Literature Review for a Successful Paper

Program 4: How to Better Manage and Share Your Information

Part A: Managing Reference Citations with RefWorks
Demonstrates how to use RefWorks, a web-based bibliography management tool, to produce bibliographies and in-text references in a variety of citation styles (e.g. MLA, APA, Chicago, etc.).

Part B: Get Started with Adobe Photoshop
Introduces the basic functions of Photoshop's Tool Bar, File Menu and Colour Palettes. Participants can turn a dull photo into a masterpiece by using the functions of scaling, adding text, saturating and more.

Part C: Get Started with 3D Printing and Application Software
Are you interested in 3D printing but have no experience? The workshop provides a basic understanding of 3D printing technologies and walks through some basic 3D modelling. Through hands-on exercises, you will experience how to make your own 3D objects using Tinkercad software.
