FirstSearch Databases

Two groups of FirstSearch databases are available in the Library: Base Package and Per Search databases. Base Package databases are accessible by all CUHK members at the Library Homepage (http://www.lib.cuhk.edu.hk). Per Search databases are accessible at the text-based Library Catalogue. Choose A> Other Information Resources at the Library Catalogue and then FirstSearch to access them. Only CUHK postgraduate students, teaching, research and administrative staff can use them.

Base Package Databases

ArticleFirst (1990- )
        ArticleFirst indexes articles from more than 12,500 journals.

CA Student Edition (1967- )
        Chemical Abstracts Student Edition is designed for undergraduate students. It indexes and abstracts to 200 most widely held chemistry journals, as well as over 200,000 dissertations.

ContentsFirst (1990- )
        ContentsFirst contains the table of contents from individual issues of more than 12,500 journals.

ERIC (1966- )
        ERIC indexes to journal articles, books, theses, curricula, conference papers, standards and guidelines related to education.

FactSearch (1984- )
        FactSearch corresponds to the printed A Matter of Fact. Over 300 works--including newspapers, periodicals, the Congressional Record, and congressional hearing--are scanned to collect items containing facts and statistics.

FastDoc (1990- )
        FastDoc gives quick and easy access to document ordering. Most of the articles cited can be ordered for online viewing or one-hour fax delivery.

GPO Monthly Catalog (7/1976- )
        GPO Monthly Catalog contains more than 450,000 records for documents on all subjects of interest to the U.S. government. It covers all types of U.S. government documents, including: Congressional reports, hearings, debates, and records; judiciary materials; documents issued by executive departments (Defense, State, Labor, Office of the President, etc.)

MEDLINE (1965- )
        MEDLINE indexes and abstracts to articles from medical journals.

NetFirst
        NetFirst indexes to Internet-accessible resources via the World Wide Web.

PapersFirst (10/1993- )
        PapersFirst contains citations of papers presented at worldwide meetings, conferences, expositions, workshops, congresses and symposia.

ProceedingsFirst (10/1993- )
        ProceedingsFirst contains citations of publications from worldwide meetings, conferences, expositions, workshops, congresses and symposia.

UnionLists
        UnionLists contains holdings for journals among OCLC member libraries.

WorldCat
        WorldCat is the OCLC Online Union Catalog, containing more than 32 million records describing items owned by libraries around the world; each record contains library holdings.

World Almanac (current year)
        Electronic versions of World Almanacs.

Arts and Humanities

Arts & Humanities Search (1980- )
        Arts & Humanities Search indexes more than 1,300 of the world's leading arts and humanities journals and selected articles from more than 5,800 social sciences and science journals.

Business and Economics

AcxiomBiz
        Contains approximately 18 million records of white page listings for businesses. The data is compiled from current white page listings from U.S. telephone directories that are updated annually.

Business Dateline (1985- )
        Business Dateline focuses on regional information vital to businesses. It provides online article text from 450+ sources, including regional publications, Business Wire press releases and major newspapers.

Business & Industry
        A multi-industry, international database that provides access to company, industry, market, and product information. Covers over 600 leading trade and business sources.

Business Organizations, Agencies, and Publications Directory
        Business Organizations includes organizations' full names, addresses, telephone numbers (including Fax) and contact persons.

Disclosure Corporate Snapshots
        Disclosure Corporate Snapshots contains information about more than 11,000 corporations whose shares are traded in the U.S.

Wilson Business Abstracts (1986- )
        Wilson Business Abstracts provides complete and accurate indexing and abstracting of 345 leading business magazines.

Worldscope GLOBAL
        Worldscope GLOBAL is a specialized database created for FirstSearch subscribers. It is derived from corporate annual and 10K reports, disclosure statements, newspapers and wire services.

Computer Science

Microcomputer Abstracts (1989- )
        Microcomputer Abstracts covers the popular magazines and professional journals on microcomputing for business, education, industry, and the home; historical and current information is included.

Conferences and Proceedings

EventLine
        EventLine has information about events scheduled worldwide from now to early in the 21st century.

General and Reference

AcximHome
        Contains approximately 80 million records of white page listings for residences. The data is compiled from current white page listings from U.S. telephone directories that are updated annually.

Biography Index
        Cites more than 2,700 periodicals and 1,800 books, including individual and collective biographies.

Consumer Index
        A subject index to the contents of over 100 periodicals. The database provides information categorized from general (the home) to more specific (automobiles), by periodical (Consumer Reports), or by a specific brand name (Coca-Cola). Intended for consumers, librarians and library users, business professionals, and educational instructors. Records include Web site addresses so that users can access free full-text information.

Library Literature (12/1984- )
        Library Literature indexes more than 220 key library and information science periodicals published internationally.

Periodical Abstracts (1987- )
        Periodical Abstracts has more than 800,000 records describing significant articles from more than 1,500 top general and academic journals.

Periodical Contents Index (1961-1991)
        Indexes the contents of older issues of periodicals in the humanities and social sciences, dating to 1961. Allows searching of back volumes of journals with the same ease and convenience as more recently published ones. Complete tables of contents are included for each issue of each journal. Includes journals in English, French, German, Italian, Spanish and other Western languages.

SIRS Researcher
        Perfect for school and public library researchers, SIRS is a general database containing thousands of full-text articles exploring social, scientific, historic, economic, political, and global issues. Articles are carefully selected from more than 1,200 domestic and international newspapers, magazines, journals, and government publications. Brief summaries accompany all articles added to the database since 1994.

WilsonSelect
        Includes a growing list of high-quality periodicals with complete indexing and abstracts. All records point to complete online full text. Comprised of records from Readers' Guide Abstracts, Social Sciences Abstracts, Humanities Abstracts, General Science Abstracts, and Wilson Business Abstracts.

General Science/Earth Sciences

General Science Abstracts (5/1984- )
        General Science Abstracts covers everything from supernovas to marine pollution and is the ideal source for researchers seeking information on a variety of scientific topics. It indexes more than 100 leading journals and magazines from the United States and Great Britain.

Life Sciences

AGRICOLA (1970- )
        AGRICOLA covers every major agricultural subject, including agricultural engineering and marketing, animal breeding, entomology, environmental pollution, farm management, foods and feeds, pesticides, rural sociology, veterinary medicine, and water resources. Citations consist of journal articles, book chapters, monographs, conference proceedings, serials, technical reports, and other materials on a range of agricultural topics. It includes over 3 million citations to materials acquired by the National Agricultural Library and cooperating institutions. It is produced by the National Agricultural Library.

Biological & Agricultural Index (1985- )
        Biological & Agricultural Index is a bibliographic database that cites articles from more than 240 periodicals. Periodicals coverage includes a wide range of scientific journals, from popular to professional, that pertain to biology and agriculture.

Biology Digest (9/1989- )
        Biology Digest has lengthy abstracts (digests) written in a nontechnical style for students and interested nonscientists. However, the digests convey solid, factual information useful to life scientists as well, especially when exploring areas outside their specialities.

Medicine and Health Sciences

AIDS & Cancer Research
        Provides access to cancer and AIDS research that is gathered from worldwide scientific literature as summarized and indexed in Virology & AIDS Abstracts, Oncogenes & Growth Factors Abstracts, and Immunology Abstracts.

Health Reference Center
        A multi-source database for health and wellness research. Rich with full-text documents, Health Reference Center draws from medical and consumer periodicals (165 fully indexed with 110 providing full text), health newsletters, reference books, referral information, topical overviews, and pamphlets. Designed especially for lay researchers, Health Reference Center provides information in terms that the non-medical professional can understand.

MDX Health Digest (1988- )
        MDX Health Digest is a consumer health database with authoritative answers to medical questions. Its information is written for the general public.

Music

RILM Abstracts of Music Literature
        Offers an international bibliography of scholarly writings on music and related disciplines in 202 languages, including original language titles; title translations in English; full bibliographic information; abstracts in English; and author, journal, and subject indexes. Includes all forms of scholarly works.

News

DataTimes--Data Times Corporation
        Provides an index of articles from some 100 U.S. newspapers. Includes The Christian Science Monitor and Commerce Business Daily, plus nearly 30 international newspapers.

The New York Times--New York Times
        Offers full text of within published The New York Times newspaper articles. Includes all articles 90 days for delivery as ASCII full-text documents. An abstract and index database is maintained with coverage from January 1994 to the present.

Newspaper Abstracts (1989- )
        Newspaper Abstracts describes significant items in more than 50 national and regional newspapers, including the New York Times, USA Today, the Boston Globe, the San Francisco Chronicle, and the Wall Street Journal.

Public Affairs and Law

Index to Legal Periodicals & Books (8/1981- )
        Index to Legal Periodicals & Books covers 620 legal journals, yearbooks, institutes, bar association organs, law reviews, and government publications originating in the United States, Canada, Great Britain, Ireland, Australia, and New Zealand.

Social Sciences

Contemporary Women's Issues
        Covers over 600 sources (periodical and nonperiodical) published by more than 100 organizations around the world. Focuses on timely and relevant topics and meaningful issues for women, including health, human rights, the work place, legal status, and more. Full text is available from all sources except The New York Times.

SocioAbs (1963- )
        Subset of Sociological Abstracts contains citations to articles in 250 English-language journals on sociology.
