How to Compose a Search?

 

Basic Search

OR 

Broadening a search with synonyms and other related words. 
e.g. Genetically engineered food  OR GM food

 
AND

Narrow a search by different concepts.
e.g. GM food AND Safety

 

NOT
(AND NOT)

Eliminate a concept from a search.
e.g. Human NOT Animal
       Human AND NOT Animal

 

Nesting

Order of precedence can be changed by using brackets. 
e.g. Safety AND (Genetically modified food OR GM food)

Advanced Search

Menu Based and Free Forms queries may be used for tuning searches to get accurate results.

Menu Based Query Builder - Available in the Advanced Search with filters limited by languages, file formats, dates, domains and so on.

with all of the words words are combined by 'AND'
with the exact phrase search with words in a specified order
with at least one of the words words are combined by 'OR'
without the words eliminate word(s) in a search by 'NOT'

Free Form Queries – search words combined with/without Boolean operators can be input directly into the query box.  Syntax varies from different search engines.  It is important to read the Help page before conducting a search.

Phrase Search - Double quotes ("  ") may be used to get pages by words in exact order specified by you.  e.g. "genetically engineered food".
