    Q.

    Can I focus my search on a certain author or within one journal title?

    A.

    Yes.  In Advanced Scholar Search, enter keywords, author, journal name, date range, or broad subject area to do a specific search.  Besides, you may use the following operators to modify your search.

    • the "+" operator makes sure your results include common words, letters or numbers that Google's search technology generally ignores, as in [+de knuth];
    • the "-" operator excludes all results that include this search term, as in [spring ¡Vauthor:spring];
    • phrase search only returns results that include this exact phrase, as in ["as you like it"];
    • the "OR" operator returns results that include either of your search terms, as in [stock call OR put];
    Q.  How do I search a specific CUHK's research paper?
    A.

    Put the paper's full title in quotations, e.g. "High Carriage Rate of TT Virus in the Cervices of Pregnant Women".  This article, if found together with other papers mentioning it, will be retrieved.  Or, just entering a few words of the title with the title operator, e.g. "intitle:tt Virus in the cervices".

    Q.

    I click on a Findit@CUHK link, but nothing happens and no window opens. Why is this?

    A. When you click on Findit@CUHK, your browser needs to open another window to display Findit@CUHK information. If you are using a program that blocks pop-up windows, you will not be able to use Findit@CUHK Links properly. Disabling the blocking program will fix the problem.
    Q.  I clicked on Findit@CUHK, but I only got to the journal's home page. Why?
    A.

    Findit@CUHK will try to get you as close as it can to the full text.  Some publishers only allow linking to the journal level. At this point you can browse to the volume and issue number of your article.  Findit@CUHK may only take you to the table of contents or the journal's home page, and you'll have to navigate the rest of the way.

    Q.  I find too many papers which mention an author, can the search be more specific?
    A.

    To search for specific authors, you can use "author:" operator, e.g. author:"af cheng", or author:"augustine f cheng".

    Q.  I'm using Findit@CUHK Links a lot. Why do I end up with so many open windows?
    A.

    Findit@CUHK Links always opens a new window for the menu, and then a separate window for the full text or catalogue search. Be sure to close these windows when you no longer need them.

    Q.  What are the names shown on the left hand side of the result page used for?
    A.

    Google Scholar provides a list of authors related to your query.  Click on an author's name and his/her papers from the result pages will be retrieved.

    Q.  What do I do when I get an error or some other "not found" message?
    A.

    The article may be so recent that library-subscribed content may not cover.  It hasn't been put online yet, so Findit@CUHK cannot retrieve it.  Please report the problem to our HelpDesk.

    Q.  What is OpenURL?
    A.

    OpenURL is a standardized syntax for transferring meta-data. The data usually describes an article or a journal. In other words, it's just a way of organizing data in a URL and pointing it to a destination.

    Q.  Why don't I see any Findit@CUHK links?
    A.

    Possible reasons:

    • You are not in campus network or not using VPN off-campus as Google Scholar only recognise CUHK's IP address. If you are using your own ISP (Internet Service Provider) from off-campus, you have to configure in Scholar Preferences page. Type "CUHK" in the "Library Links" section. Select the check box of "Chinese University of Hong Kong" and then click the "Save preferences" button. The database is not OpenURL compliant. e.g. the Chinese databases: Wanfang Data, CJN, or English databases: Lexis-Nexis, Factiva.
    • The Database is not subscribed by our library such as Infotrac, Scopus.
    • The coverage data does not match with our subscription period.
    • Your citation isn't complete enough to enable linking with Finit@CUHK.

    Q.

    Why didn't I get a full text link for my article?

    A.

    Possible reasons:

    • The citation appeared in the database before the publisher put the full text online.
    • The publisher or author withheld the full text
    • There may be a typo in the citation.

    • Please report any problem links to helpline@cuhk.edu.hk for further investigation.

    Q. Why is there sometimes more than one option for full text?
     A. We may subscribe to more than one source of full text for a journal. Findit@CUHK link directs you to all the options it finds for a particular article.  For example, British Journal of Educational Technology can be found in both Ebscohost and Ingenta.
