Privacy
Policy Statement of the University Library System
The University Library System of The Chinese University
of Hong Kong (the Library) respects personal privacy and is committed
to protect the personal data of our users. In particular, the Library
observes the Personal Data (Privacy) Ordinance (the Ordinance), Chapter
486 of the Laws of Hong Kong in the dissemination and management of
personal data.

The Library uses, holds,
and collects personal data of Library users mainly for the following
purposes:

Creation of Library
accounts

Compilation of statistics
for monitoring usage and planning future development

Verification of the
identity of eligible Library users.

The provision of personal
information is entirely voluntary. However, insufficient personal
data may prevent the Library from providing adequate access to library
services.

All staff members of
the Library are instructed to comply with the Ordinance. All personal
information, in electronic or printed format, is treated with the
strictest standards of security and confidentiality. Only authorized
Library staff has access to personal data stored in our computer system
for the purpose of performing library work.

Data collected will only
be transferred to relevant departments and administrative units within
CUHK for processing and verifications when need arises. The Library
will not disclose any personal information provided by you to any
external bodies or organizations without your prior consent, unless
it is required by law.

Personal information
will be retained for a limited period and would be destroyed immediately
after it had served its purpose.

Cookies, short pieces
of data stored in your web browser, are used in some of the Library
websites. These information will only be used for identification and
customization, and the Library will not retain any information in
this process. The cookies will be automatically cleared once you close
your browser.
