Placing Materials on Reserve

The University Library System provides reserve service to support teaching activities at the University. Professors, instructors and teaching assistants are all welcome to place course reading materials on reserve, either in print or in electronic form.

Materials

Instructors may place lecture notes, problem sets and solutions, library books, personal books, etc. on reserve. Non-copyrighted materials including lecture notes may also be put on Electronic Reserve. In addition, journal articles available from the following databases can be placed on Electronic Reserve:

  • EBSCOhost
  • IEEE Xplore
  • JSTOR
  • OCLC First search Electronic Collections Online
  • Ovid Web Gateway
  • ProQuest
  • ScienceDirect
  • Traditional reserve materials are for short loans, ranging from 2 hours to 7 days. Both traditional and electronic reserve materials can be searched by Professor's name, course title and course code via the Library Catalogue. Faculty may also place non-print materials on short-term course reserve in the UC Wu Chung Multimedia Library.

Open Reserve at the University Library

Beginning with the first semester of 2002/2003, the University Library will have the new Open Reserve system.

Open Reserve consists of books from the ULS's collection which are shelved in an open access area adjacent to the Reserve Books and Special Collections Counter on the G/F, University Library. High use course materials are placed here for browsing and borrowing. Personal books and loose-leaf items such as lecture notes, journal articles and handouts provided by teaching staff are still kept behind the Counter.

    Copyright

The Copyright Ordinance (Chapter 528) governs the making of photocopies or other reproduction of copyrighted materials. The University Library System reserves the right to refuse to accept a copying order, if, in its judgment, fulfillment of the order would involve violation of the Copyright Law.

    Processing Time

The library will process reserve materials within 2 business days after receiving requests. However, at the beginning of the semester it is necessary to allow more time to complete the process, when large numbers of materials are being placed on reserve at the same time. Longer processing time is expected for:

    1. Requests submitted on or after the first day of class.
    2. Library books which are currently unavailable.
    3. Requests with an incomplete citation.

Reserve requests are processed in the order they are received. There will be no priority given to requests submitted after the semester has started.

    Circulation Statistics

At the end of each semester, instructors will receive the circulation statistics of their reserve items. They may decide whether the items are to be retained or removed for the next semester accordingly.
