RichWin


What is RichWin?

  • A Chinese language processing software.
  • An add-on program that operates on Windows environment with many popular application software such as Netscape Communicator, MS Office products, etc. to support input and display of Chinese characters


    Why RichWin?

  • supports multiple encodings of Chinese characters (Big-5, GB, GBFT, etc.);
  • supports display of Japanese characters (JIS or Shift JIS code) and Korean characters(KCS code);
  • many other desirable features such as encoding conversion between two encoding


    How to have characters in a document displayed or printed properly?

    1. Documents with Chinese Characters
    2. Documents with diacritics or special characters
    3. Documents with Japanese or Korean characters

    1. Documents with Chinese characters

    Run RichWin, if it's not turned on already, and change the display mode to Big5 or GB code.

    Hong Kong and Taiwan area usually use Big-5 codes, while mainland China uses GB code.

    To change the display mode to Big5 or GB, click the leftmost button of then select:

    Big5 or
    Big5(JT) for simplified characters
    GBFT or
    GB for simplified characters


    2. Documents with diacritics or special characters

    When RichWin is turned on, some diacritics or special characters in a document (e.g. retrieved Innopac record using QvtTerm with WYSE/VT220 terminal type, articles from e-journals or online newspapers, etc.) may be displayed or printed as funny or unrecognizable characters.

    For example:

    To turn off RichWin, click the leftmost button of and select the last item on the pull down menu:


    3. Documents with Japanese / Korean

    Run RichWin, if it's not turned on already, and change the display mode to ShiftJIS (or JIS) for Japanese; and KSC for Korean.

    When using Netscape to read Japanese resources, select "View" -> "Character set" (or "Encoding") -> "Japanese (Auto-Detect)".

    To change the display mode to ShiftJIS or JIS or KSC, click the leftmost button of then select:

    ShiftJIS
    JIS
    KSC
