Natural Language Processing with Python (5 sessions)
Series: Digital Scholarship and Research Data Workshops (Sep-Nov 2025)
Invited Speaker: Dr. Kwong-cheong WONG, Senior Lecturer, Data Science and Policy Studies Programme, CUHK
Date: 2-30 Oct 2025 (Thur)
This workshop series offers hands-on training in Natural Language Processing (NLP) using Python. Designed for beginners and intermediate learners, the series covers essential NLP techniques – from text preprocessing (including tokenization, lemmatization, and stopword removal) and word embeddings to advanced topics such as Transformer and large language models (LLM).
Participants will explore practical applications such as text classification, named entity recognition, topic modeling, and question answering. The workshops also delve into cutting-edge tools like spaCy, BERT, and OpenAI models, with sessions on visualizing text data and building chatbots.
Workshop Outline
- Lesson 1: NLP Basics – Text Preprocessing and Syntax
- Lesson 2: Word Embeddings and Text Classification
- Lesson 3: Named Entity Recognition and Topic Modeling
- Lesson 4: Transformers and Question Answering
- Lesson 5: Large Language Models and Chatbots
Through hands-on exercises, this series equips attendees with the skills to effectively implement NLP solutions.
Remarks:
- Participants must have Python knowledge;
- Participants will need to bring their own device for hands-on practice.
