The Library holds an extensive collection of Chinese and English language materials on Chinese Studies, the holdings are integrated in the general collection, collected in the named collections such as Chinese Overseas Collection, or in the Special Collections such as the Minguo collection, Cultural Revolution collection and Modern Chinese Drama Collection.  The solid research level collection includes archives and manuscripts, Chinese rare and semi-rare books, collectanea (congshu), monographs, periodicals, economic and statistical data etc.

The oldest items in the Library are Chinese oracle bones dating from the Shang dynasty (ca. 1675-1029 BC).  The Library holds approximately 900 titles of Chinese rare books, comprising 2 titles from the Yuan dynasty, 245 titles from the Ming dynasty, 490 from the Qing dynasty, and over 150 titles of Ming-Qing handwritten copies, manuscripts and editions from Japan and Korea.  The Library’s Chinese Rare Book Digital Collection currently provides full text open access to over 500 Chinese rare books.

The Library’s Chinese language holdings comprise about 1.1 million volumes of printed books and over 75,000 bound serials, it is one of the largest collection of academic publications in Chinese language from Taiwan, Mainland, Hong Kong, Southeast Asia, or overseas.  The Chinese language and literature collection is an area of strength, it accounts to about 200,000 volumes of books and bound periodicals.  The Chinese History collection is well over 180,000 volumes and the Special Collections holds over 150,000 items.  The collection is further enriched by a wide array of electronic resources which comprises of 1.8 million Chinese ebooks, over 33,000 Chinese periodicals and 100 databases, as well as digital contents made available through the Library’s Digital Initiative.  All the materials are searchable through the Library’s Easy Search.
