Eminent mathematician Professor Shing-Tung Yau is an alumnus of CUHK. At the age of 27, he solved the difficult geometry problem known as the Calabi conjecture. The “Calabi-Yau manifold” he proposed has been applied to string theory in physics. Professor Yau is the first Chinese to win two of the highest honours in mathematics, the Fields Medal and the Wolf Prize. He is currently the Distinguished Visiting Professor-at-Large, the Director of the Institute of Mathematical Sciences, and the Founding Director of the Zhizhen School of Interdisciplinary Mathematical Sciences at CUHK.
