In September 1986, University Librarian Dr. David S. Yen took up office.
The large sculpture Gate on the piazza in front of the University Library was unveiled in December 1987 and later re-named the Gate of Wisdom. It was the work of Mr. Ju Ming, the world-renowned sculptor from Taiwan, and was the donation of Dr. the Hon. Szeto Wai, the former University Architect.
