The University Library was established in 1965 and was originally located in the On Lee Building, Kowloon.
The first University Librarian Dr. Alfred Chiu Kaiming took up office in September 1966.
In August 1969, the University Library moved to temporary quarters in Benjamin Franklin Centre on the Shatin Campus.
The foundation stone of the University Library was laid by Sir David Trench, the then Governor of Hong Kong and Chancellor of the University. 28 September 1970.
In December 1970, the University Librarian Dr. Wang Chi took up office. Dr. Wang took up office again in January 1985.
